સુન્દરકાણ્ડમ્
અથ એકોનષષ્ટિતમસ્સર્ગઃ||

એતદાખ્યાય તત્સર્વં હનુમાન્ મારુતાત્મજઃ|
ભૂયઃ સમુપચક્રામ વચનં વક્તુ મુત્તરમ્||1||

સ|| હનુમાન્ મારુતાત્મજઃ એતત્ સર્વં આખ્યાય ભૂયઃ ઉત્તરં વચનં વક્તું સમુપચક્રમે||

Hanuman, the son of wind god, having narrated all of this, again started to say some more words.

સફલો રાઘવોદ્યોગઃ સુગ્રીવસ્ય ચ સંભ્રમઃ|
શીલમાસાદ્ય સીતાયા મમ ચ પ્રવણં મનઃ||2||

સ||રાઘવોદ્યોગઃ સુગ્રીવસ્ય સંભ્રમઃ સફલઃ | સીતાયાઃ શીલં આસાદ્ય મમ મનશ્ચ પ્રવણં||

Rama's task, Sugriva's efforts have been successful. Seeing Sita's conduct my mind has developed devotion.

તપસા ધારયેલ્લોકાન્ ક્રુદ્ધો વા નિર્દહેદપિ|
સર્વધાતિ પ્રવૃદ્ધોઽસૌ રાવણો રાક્ષસાધિપઃ||3||
તસ્ય તાં સ્પૃશતો ગાત્રં તપસા ન વિનાશિતમ્|
ન તદગ્નિશિખા કુર્યાત્ સંસ્પૃષ્ટા પાણિના સતી||4||
જનકસ્યાત્મજા કુર્યાદ્યત્ક્રોધ કલુષીકૃતા|

સ||અસૌ રાક્ષસાધિપઃ સર્વથા અતિપ્રવૃદ્ધઃ તપસા લોકાન્ નિર્દહેત્ |કૃદ્ધોવાપિ નિર્દહેત્ અપિ||તામ્ સ્પૃશતઃ તસ્ય ગાત્રં તપસા ન વિનાશિતં | ક્રોધકલુષીકૃતા જનકસ્ય આત્મજા યત્ કુર્યાત્ તત્ પાણિના સંસ્પૃષ્ટ સતી અગ્નિશિખા નકુર્યાત્||

Ever rich in asceticism this king of Rakshasas can burn the whole world with the power of his penance. Even though (Sita was) angry he was not burnt ( because ever dutiful Sita will not act without Rama's permission). Because of the power of his penance he was not burnt though he touched her limbs. What the enraged Janaka's daughter can do even the flame of fire cannot do ( she did not since she wanted Rama to kill Ravana).

જામ્બવત્પ્રમુખાન્ સર્વાનનુજ્ઞાસ્ય મહાહરીન્||5||
અસ્મિન્નેવં ગતે કાર્યે ભવતાં ચ નિવેદિતે|
ન્યાયં સ્મ સહવૈદેહ્યા દ્રષ્ટું તૌ પાર્થિવાત્મજૌ||6||

સ||ભવતામ્ નિવેદિતે અસ્મિન્ કાર્યે એવં ગતે જાંબવત્ પ્રમુખાન્ મહાહરીન્ સમનુજ્ઞાય વૈદેહ્યા સહ તૌ પાર્થિવાત્મજૌ દ્રષ્ટું ન્યાયં સ્મ||

I have narrated what all has been completed , with the permission of Jambavan and others. It is better to see the king's sons ( Rama and Lakshmana) along with Sita.

અહમેકોપિ પર્યાપ્તઃ સરાક્ષસગણાં પુરી|
તાં લંકાં તરસા હન્તું રાવણં ચ મહાબલમ્||7||
કિં પુનસ્સહિતો વીરૈર્બલવદ્ભિઃ કૃતાત્મભિઃ|
કૃતાસ્ત્રૈઃ પ્લવગૈઃ શૂરૈઃ ભવદ્ભિર્વિજયૈષિભિઃ||8||

સ|| અહ એકઃ અપિ સરાક્ષસગણાં તાં લંકાપુરીં મહાબલં રાવણં ચ તરસા હન્તું પર્યાપ્તઃ||બલવદ્ભિઃ કૃતાત્મભિઃ શૂરૈઃ વિજયૈષિભિઃ પ્લવગૈઃ ભવદ્ભિઃ સહિતઃ કિં પુનઃ ||

I am alone enough to destroy the city of Lanka , the great army , the Rakshasa warriors and even Ravana. What to speak of doing so with all of you who are strong wise accomplished heroic ones desiring victory.

અહં તુ રાવણં યુદ્ધે સસૈન્યં સપુરસ્સરમ્|
સહપુત્ત્રં વધિષ્યામિ સહોદરયુતં યુધિ||9||

સ|| અહં તુ યુદ્ધે સસૈન્યં સપુરસ્સરં સહપુત્ત્રં સહોદરયુતં રાવણં વધિષ્યામિ ||

I can kill Ravana along with his army , his sons, his brothers and his followers.

બ્રાહ્મમૈન્દ્રં ચ રૌદ્રં ચ વાયુવ્યં વારુણં તથા|
યદિ શક્રજિતોઽસ્ત્રાણિ દુર્નિરીક્ષાણિ સંયુગે||10||
તાન્યહં વિધમિષ્યામિ હનિષ્યામિ ચ રાક્ષસાન્|

સ|| બ્રહ્મં ઇન્દ્રં ચ રૌદ્રં ચ વાયવ્યં તથાવારુણં શક્રજિતઃ અસ્ત્રાણિ દુર્નિરીક્ષાણિ યદિ તાનિ સંયુગે વધિષ્યામિ રાક્ષસાન્ હનિષ્યામિ ચ||

Even if the weapons of Brahma, Indra ,Rudra. Vayu , Varuna which are difficult to see are used by Indrajit, I can kill and destroy them in a war.

ભવતામભ્યનુજ્ઞાતો વિક્રમો મે રુણદ્ધિતમ્||11||
મયાsતુલા વિસૃષ્ટા હિ શૈલવૃષ્ટિર્નિરન્તરા|
દેવાનપિ રણે હન્યાત્ કિં પુનઃ તાન્ નિશાચરાન્||12||

સ|| ભવતામ્ અભ્યનુજ્ઞાતઃ મે વિક્રમઃ તં રુણાદ્ધિ| મયા વિસૃષ્ટા અતુલા નિરન્તરા શૈલવૃષ્ટિઃ રણે દેવાન્ અપિ હન્યાત્ | તાન્ નિશાચરાન્ કિં પુઅનઃ||

If you permit me, I will shatter them with my valor. With ceaseless matchless shower of rocks in a war even the Devas will die, what to speak of the night creatures!

સાગરોઽપ્યતિયાદ્વેલાં મન્દરઃ પ્રચલેદપિ|
ન જામ્બવન્તં સમરે કમ્પયે દરિવાહિની||13||

સ|| સાગરં વેલાં અતિયાદપિ મન્દરઃ પ્રચલેદપિ સમરે અરિવાહિનિ જામ્બવતં ન કમ્પયેત્ ||

The ocean may exceed its limits, the mount Mandara may be shaken but Jambavan cannot be shaken in a war.

સર્વરાક્ષસ સંઘાનાં રાક્ષસા યે ચ પૂર્વકા|
અલમેકો વિનાશાય વીરો વાલિસુતઃ કપિઃ||14||
પનસ સ્યોરુવેગેન નીલસ્ય ચ મહાત્મનઃ|
મન્દરોઽપ્યવસીર્યેત કિં પુનર્યુધિ રાક્ષસાઃ||15||
સ દેવાસુર યક્ષેષુ ગન્ધર્વોરગ પક્ષિસુ|
મૈન્દસ્ય પ્રતિયોદ્ધારં શંસત દ્વિવિદસ્ય વા||16||

સ|| વીરઃ વાલિસુતઃ કપિઃ એકઃ સર્વરાક્ષસંઘાનાં પૂર્વકાઃ યે વિનાસાય અલમ્||પનસસ્ય મહાત્મનઃ નીલસ્ય ઊરુવેગેન મન્દરો અપિ અવશીર્યતે | યુધિ રાક્ષસાઃ કિમ્ પુનઃ|| સદેવાસુર યક્ષેષુ ગન્ધર્વોરગપક્ષિષુ મૈન્દસ્ય દ્વિવિદસ્ય પ્રતિયોદ્ધારં શંસત||

The heroic son of Vali alone is enough to destroy all the Rakshasas led by him ( Ravana). The speed of the thighs of the great soul Panasa as well as Nila shatters the mount Mandara, what to speak of the Rakshasas in a war. Tell me who among Devas, Asuras, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Uragas and Pakshis can battle Mainda and Dvivida.

અશ્વિપુત્રૌ મહાભાગૌ વેતૌ પ્લવગસત્તમૌ|
એતયોઃ પ્રતિયોદ્ધારં ન પશ્યામિ રણાજિરે ||17||
પિતામહવરોત્સેકાત્ પરમં દર્પમાસ્થિતૌ|
અમૃતપ્રાશના વેતૌ સર્વવાનર સત્તમૌ||18||

સ|| અશ્વિપુત્રૌ એતૌ મહાભાગૌ પ્લવગસત્તમૌ રણાજિરે એતયોઃ પ્રતિયોદ્ધારં ન પશ્યામિ || પિતામહવરોત્સેકાત્ પરમં દર્પં આસ્થિતૌ એતૌ વાનરસત્તમૌ અમૃતપાશિનૌ ||

These two sons of Ashwini are outstanding , foremost among fighters. I do not see any one who can face them in a battle. With boon given by the creator, being very proud these two foremost among Vanaras consumed the nectar of immortality.

અશ્વિનોર્માનનાર્થં હિ સર્વલોકપિતામહઃ|
સર્વાવધ્યત્વમતુલં અનયોર્દત્તવાન્પુરા||19||
વરોત્સેકેન મત્તૌ ચ પ્રમથ્ય મહતીમ્ ચમૂમ્|
સુરાણામમૃતં વીરૌ પીતવન્તૌ પ્લવંગમૌ||20||
એતાવેવ હિ સંક્રુદ્ધૌ સવાજિરથકુંજરામ્|
લંકાં નાશયિતું શક્તા સર્વે તિષ્ઠન્તુ વાનરાઃ||21||

સ|| પુરા સર્વલોકપિતામહઃ અશ્વિનોઃ માનાર્થં અનયોઃ અતુલં સર્વ અવધ્વત્વં દત્તવાન્ ||વરોત્સેકેન મત્તૌ ચ વીરૌ પ્લવંગમૌ સુરાણાં મહતીં ચમૂં પ્રમથ્ય અમૃતં પીતવન્તૌ || સંકૃદ્ધૌ એતાવેવ સવાજિરથકુંજરાં લંકાં નાસયિતું શક્તૌ | સર્વે વાનરાઃ તિષ્ટન્તુ||

Earlier the grand sire of all worlds has given Asvini's progeny immeasurable invulnerability to honor them . Armed with the boons vast armies of Suras have been defeated by the heroic Vanaras. And they drank the nectar of immortality. If these two become angry they can destroy Lanka along with all the elephants horses and chariots. All the Vanaras can stay.

મયૈવ નિહતા લંકા દગ્ધા ભસ્મીકૃતા પુનઃ|
રાજમાર્ગેષુ સર્વત્ર નામ વિશ્રાવિતં મયા||22||

સ|| લંકા મયૈવ નિહતા પુનઃ ભસ્મીકૃતા રાજમાર્ગેષુ સર્વત્ર મયા નામ વિસ્રાવિતમ્ ||

I have burnt Lanka and made my name known all over the royal paths.

જયત્યતિ બલો રામો લક્ષ્મણસ્ય મહાબલઃ|
રાજા જયતિ સુગ્રીવો રાઘવેણાધિપાલિતઃ||23||
અહં કોસલરાજસ્ય દાસઃ પવનસંભવઃ|
હનુમાનિતિ સર્વત્ર નામ વિશ્રાવિતં મયા||24||

સ|| અતિબલઃ રામઃ જયતિ| મહાબલઃ લક્ષ્મણઃ ચ| રાઘવેણ અભિપાલિતઃ રાજા સુગ્રીવઃ જયતિ | પવનસંભવઃ અહં કોસલરાજસ્ય દાસઃ| હનુમાન્ ઇતિ મયા નામ વિશ્રાવિતમ્||

I announced that mighty Rama will triumph. So will mighty Lakshmana. Protected by Rama Sugriva will triumph. I am son of wind god and a servant of Rama. My name is Hanuman.

અશોકવનિકા મધ્યે રાવણસ્ય દુરાત્મનઃ|
અધસ્તાચ્છિંશુપાવૃક્ષે સાધ્વી કરુણમાસ્થિતા||25||
રાક્ષસીભિ પરિવૃતા શોકસન્તાપકર્શિતા|
મેઘલેખાપરિવૃતા ચન્દ્રલેખેવ નિષ્પ્રભા||26||
અચિન્તયન્તી વૈદેહી રાવણં બલદર્પિતમ્|

સ|| દુરાત્મનઃ રાવણસ્ય અશોકવનિકામધ્યે શિંશુપાવૃક્ષે અધસ્તાત્ સાધ્વી રાક્ષસીભિઃ પરિવૃતા શોકસંતાપ કર્શિતા મેઘલેખાપરિવૃતા ચંદ્ર લેખં ઇવ નિષ્પ્રભા બલદર્પિતં રાવણં અચિન્તયન્તી વૈદેહી કરુણં આસ્થિતા||

In the middle of the Ashoka grove of the evil minded Ravana, under the Simsupa tree , the pious lady surrounded by Rakshasa women, tormented by sorrow, without brightness looking like moon rays veiled by clouds, not caring for the glory of Ravana . is brooding over Rama only.

પતિવ્રતા ચ સુશ્રોણી અવષ્ટબ્ધા ચ જાનકી||27||
અનુરક્તા હિ વૈદેહી રામં સર્વાત્મના શુભા|
અનન્યચિત્તા રામે ચ પૌલોમીવ પુરન્દરે||28||

સ|| પતિવ્રતા સુશ્રોણી જાનકી અવષ્ટબ્ધા શુભા વૈદેહી સર્વાત્મના રામં અનુરક્તા પુરન્દરે પૌલોમિ ઇવ રામે અનન્યચિત્તા (અસ્તિ)||

The chaste woman of beautiful hips, Janaki though bound is wholly devoted to Rama only, like Poulomi is devoted to Indra.

તદેકવાસઃ સંવીતા રજોધ્વસ્તા તથૈવ ચ|
શોકસન્તાપ દીનાંગી સીતા ભર્તૃહિતે રતા||29||

સ|| તદેકવાસસંવીતા રજોધ્વસ્થા શોકસંતાપદીનાંગી સીતા ભર્તૃહિતે રતા ||

Wearing a single piece of cloth, filled with dust, very sorrowful and piteous, Sita is desirous of only the welfare of her husband.

સા મયા રાક્ષસી મધ્યે તર્જ્યમાના મુહુર્મુહુઃ|
રાક્ષસીભિર્વિરૂપાભિઃ દૃષ્ટા હિ પ્રમદાવને||30||
એકવેણીધરા દીના ભર્તૃચિન્તાપરાયણા|
અથશ્શયા વિવર્ણાંગી પદ્મિનીવ હિમાગમે||31||
રાવણાદ્વિનિવૃત્તાર્થા મર્તવ્યકૃત નિશ્ચયા|

સ|| વિરૂપાભિઃ રાક્ષસીભિઃ મુહુર્મુહુઃ તર્જ્યમાના ,દીના ભર્તૃચિન્તાપરાયણા અથઃ શય્યા , હિમાગમે પદ્મિનીમિવ વિવર્ણાંગી, રાવણાત્ વિનિવૃત્તાર્થા, મર્તવ્યકૃતનિશ્ચયા સા મયા રાક્ષસીમધ્યે પ્રમદાવને દૃષ્ટા||

Thus Sita, who is again and again threatened by ugly looking Rakshasis, who is piteous and always thinking of her husband , who is sleeping on the ground, who is without luster like the lotus on the onset of winter , who has turned away from Ravana, who is set on giving up her life, who is in the pleasure garden in the middle of Rakshasa women, is seen by me.

કથંચિન્ મૃગશાબાક્ષી વિશ્વાસ મુપપાદિતા||32||
તતઃ સંભાષિતા ચૈવ સર્વમર્થં ચ દર્શિતા|
રામસુગ્રીવ સખ્યં ચ શ્રુત્વા પ્રીતિમુપાગતા||33||

સ||મૃગશાબાક્ષી કથંચિત્ ઉપપાદિતા તતઃ સંભાષિતા સર્વં અર્થં ચ દર્શિતા રામસુગ્રીવસખ્યં ચ શ્રુત્વા પ્રીતિં ઉપાગતા||

Somehow the doe eyed one has been given confidence, then spoke to. Hearing about the alliance of Rama and Sugriva gave her happiness.

નિયતઃ સમુદાચારો ભક્તિર્ભર્તરિ ચોત્તમા|
યન્નહન્તિ દશગ્રીવં સ મહાત્મા કૃતાગસમ્||34||

સ|| મહાત્મા સા કૃતાગસમ્ દશગ્રીવં ન હન્તિ ઇતિ યત્ (તત્) નિયતઃ સમુદાચારઃ ભર્તરિ ઉત્તમા ભક્તિઃ ||

That the ten-headed one though having done harm is not killed , is because the chaste disciplined lady's high devotion to her husband.

નિમિત્તમાત્રં રામસ્તુ વધે તસ્ય ભવિષ્યતિ|
સા પ્રકૃત્યૈવ તન્વંગી તદ્વિયોગાત્ ચ કર્શિતા||35||
પ્રતિપત્પાઠશીલસ્ય વિદ્યેવ તનુતાં ગતા|

સ|| રામસ્તુ તસ્ય વધે નિમિત્તમાત્રં ભવિષ્યતિ| પ્રકૃત્યૈવ તન્વંગી તદ્વિયોગાત્ કર્શિતા ચ સા પ્રતિપત્પાઠશીલસ્ય વિદ્યેવ તનુમતાં ગતા|

Rama is there as the instrument of killing Ravana. Due to separation from her husband, the lady is with a thin body like the students on the first day of studies.

એવમાસ્તે મહાભાગા સીતા શોકપરાયણા|
યદત્ર પ્રતિકર્તવ્યંતત્ સર્વં ઉપપદ્યતામ્||36||

સ|| મહાભાગા સીતા અસ્તે એવં શોકપરાયણા | અત્ર યત્ પ્રતિકર્તવ્યં તત્ સર્વં ઉપપદ્યતામ્||

The noble lady is thus absorbed in grief. What action needs to be done by all that is to be proposed.

ઇત્યાર્ષે શ્રીમદ્રામાયણે આદિકાવ્યે વાલ્મીકીયે
ચતુર્વિંશત્ સહસ્રિકાયાં સંહિતાયામ્
શ્રીમત્સુન્દરકાણ્ડે એકોનષષ્ટિતમસ્સર્ગઃ ||

Thus ends the fifty ninth Sarga of Sundarakanda in Ramayana the first poem ever composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
